Big Woods Creative bio picture
  • “All the things I love is what my business is about.”

  • Welcome to Big Woods Creative, the home of my freelance graphic design work and landscape photography. I'm glad you're here. I have finally found a little place to call home on the web, and I am loving what I can do with this blog-site! Have a look around. You'll get to know me and the type of work I like to do.

I love beautiful things in print: publications, cards, especially books. My love for the outdoors, beautiful scenes and great skies nurtures my interest in landscape photography. I love my boys, and they are my inspiration for keeping most things quiet and simple, since they provide the clutter, noise and daily surprises.

Scroll down and you can see what I've been up to recently. I hope my site helps me stay in touch with friends and past clients with the work I am doing, and also help introduce myself to new clients and friends as well. Please, share a comment, and say hello!

Los Cabos, Mexico

I’m not sure if I would have ever traveled to Los Cabos had I not been asked by a dear friend to be a part of her wedding there. Now I’m sitting in Minnesota dreaming of a day I might be so lucky to go back. It was not the smoothest trip for the somewhat challenging traveler I am, but those four brief and beautiful days are sealed in my memory. These scenes were all captured from the beach in front of the Hilton Los Cabos where we stayed and where our friends Brooke & Matt were married Monday evening.

The sunrise photos were taken early on the morning of their wedding. No, I don’t intend to take the rare opportunity away from two toddlers to get up at dawn rather than sleep in. But it has happened before in Minnesota and other places that I open my eyes early in the morning, and I’m drawn to peek outside before trying to fall back asleep. Following this instinct has rewarded me in the past. So on Monday morning I peeked out our balcony and saw the pink sky, then quite literally crawled out of our room and onto the beach. I walked for awhile, reveling in the serenity, in a place that seemed worlds away from my here and now.

I treasure this first photo, my favorite. Their wedding couldn’t have been more perfect. The destination could not have been more breathtaking. Tonight, home has never felt so good.

[ It was not intentional that these birds ended up in my photographs. They seemed to be everywhere though, so it was hard to keep them out! ]

Tiff - Beautiful, Amy! I totally want to go there…

One busy March

Aside from the Property Portfolio, here are a few more Oak Realty projects I was working on in March…

These pocket size ads are being used at trade shows and elsewhere this spring to gain new subscribers to the Heart of the Lakes Property Portfolio’s digital edition. I love these “mini ads.” It’s not the first time I’ve created them, and it won’t be the last. There are so many uses! (And the hard case for tucking a dozen in your purse, bag or car is awfully handy!) The reverse side is black with various contact information on it.

Oak was well overdue for a new mailing label for large mailers, and with some fun new print pieces being sent this Spring, I was glad to design something new that complimented the contents inside! These were printed on 6-up label stock for use with laser printers.

A new print piece being shared and mailed this year is a 12-page brochure that offers a look at Oak Realty as a company, their approach to marketing and an overview of the Heart of the Lakes area. Sort of an all-in-one, multipurpose publication. Between this project and the Property Portfolio, I definitely brushed up on my writing skills in March!

Heart of the Lakes Property Portfolio

My lack of postings in March was in large part due to this project. Ready to embark on a new approach to their advertising, Oak Realty began building on the idea of a company-wide property catalog over a year ago. It took some turns along the way, but the final concept addressed the initial goals regarding cost, quality and the audience it would reach. I was excited to have this project on my plate and work through not only the creative development of what it would look like, but also help manage the distribution of its print version and digital companion once it was done. (and horray, we’re sharing it in both formats this week!)

Oak Realty’s Heart of the Lakes Property Portfolio will be published in five yearly editions, by seasons that relate closely to real estate in our area. Each issue is shared in a fun digital version (which you can view below). It is available on Oak Realty’s web site, where you can also sign-up to have each issue delivered directly to your inbox. Print copies are available by request and at a number of local establishments. The Early Spring 2010 edition, available now, is 32 pages and filled with lakeshore, residential, land and commercial opportunities available in the area and represented by Oak Realty.

Excluding books, I haven’t worked on a project of this size in awhile. It has reminded me how rewarding larger publications can be as a designer. I am anxious to hear some feedback. If you happen upon a copy, please let me know what you think. And have fun looking through the digital version! Being someone that likes to hold my work in my hands when I’m done, I was surprised how much I enjoyed developing the digital version. With cute little flipping copies to embed in blogs, facebook and other cool places, how couldn’t you love it!

The Spring Edition will be out in May. Up next, the rest of what kept me so busy in March!

A Vegas Wedding Standout

It’s my brother-in-law and sister-in-law’s wedding anniversary today, so I dug up this project to share. Two years ago they were married in Las Vegas. We were all there for a long weekend of fun! Our gift to them was this custom print I designed commemorating their special day. The collection of photos include special moments from their ceremony and some scenes from the strip and Treasure Island, their base camp.

A standout is a style of print display which mounts an E-Surface print to 1.5″ lighweight gatorfoam, with optional white or black trim (this one was black, you’ll see the edge in the second photo). The finished size of this piece is 16×24, the great thing is they come ready to hang! Standouts are a great alternative to display photos without the weight of glass, or the need for matting and framing.

Congratulations J & L on your 2nd anniversary!

Ice Out

Last summer was my first with a kayak. It’s a single, and this leaves no room for anyone else to interrupt my time in it. Beautiful, isn’t it? (Yes, my oldest enjoys riding with me in the summer, and he was begging me already this morning to take him out, along with his fishing pole) but for the most part, I go out alone. At half price on winter clearance, it was good deal. I was buying the equally hard to fit in and hard to find, “mommy-time.” What I got was exactly that, yet much more.

The ice moved out from our shore a few days ago. I paddled yesterday morning along the sheet of ice still left in the middle of the lake and I was hardly cool. What a treat these 70 degree days have been! I woke up this morning and headed out before the kids got up, before the dog got out, before the morning check list would begin. Heavens, I am blessed to live on water. To do nothing but put in my contacts, sneak outside and start my day here.

I love my little yellow kayak.

A Sanibel Sunset

I love being here. This is Sanibel Island. I’ve been coming here with my family for… this sounds strange to say… 30 years (yep-that mile marker is right around the corner now!) I’ve enjoyed seeing my boys do many of the things I remember from my childhood… bike trailer rides, shell collecting, swimming, mini golfing, eating a crumb donut or two (for me, like ten). It is great to be a kid on Sanibel. Really, it’s great to be any age on Sanibel.

Tonight I dropped my island pizza supper when I saw these skies out the window. And like all good skies, a few minutes later, it was gone.

melissa - I think I need one of these on canvas to add to my Sanibel collection!

Brooke & Matt: Part II

In February I finished the actual wedding invitation for my friends Brooke and Matt. I shared their Save the Date back in January. Their Los Cabos wedding is only weeks away now! Last weekend I enjoyed a refreshing trip to the cities (yes – it is nice to get out of the “country” once in awhile!) We had a great time catching up on our busy lives while assembling the invites and preparing them to be mailed. Here is a peek at how they turned out.

Included in the fold out style invitation was the formal invitation panel, a flat card with directions and a custom map, and an RSVP card. Custom labels were done for the RSVP envelopes and large outer envelope. All of the papers were metallic, and the finished piece was relaxed, classy and just looks like fun! We can’t wait to be there ~ Happy Wedding Day Brooke & Matt!
